No School

The governor just announced that school would not come back until May 4 at the earliest. On the one hand this is a relief because it is obvious to everyone that we won't be back to normal for quite some time and at least MA is going to do right by its people even if the feds are determined to get people killed. On the other hand it's a grim reminder that we won't be back to normal for quite some time...

My kids' teachers have been reaching out in a variety of ways which we really appreciate. Our daughter's first grade teacher has been on a couple of video chats with her so far, and we'll have one with our son's preschool teacher tomorrow. The principal at my daughter's school has been sending out near-daily videos for the kids which are inspirational and help give things a little more semblance of normalcy. Unfortunately since not every student has access to technology they can't legally do full-class virtual meetings at the moment.

I don't know what's going to happen this year - it seems obvious that school won't be coming back until September, just like it seems obvious that our whole society is going to be shut down for quite a long time. I don't know how this will affect school next year, but it seems clear that the kids will be behind where they usually would be. I have confidence in our teachers and the school system that they will find solutions but I'm sure it is going to be very difficult.
